Is Your AC Ready for Spring? Common Cooling Problems to Fix Before Summer

As spring quickly approaches and temperatures begin to rise, many homeowners start turning their air conditioning back on for the first time in months. If your system is running but your home still feels warm or uncomfortable, it may be an early sign that something is not working properly. Catching these issues now can help you avoid bigger problems once the summer heat arrives.

Some of the most common cooling issues start small. A clogged air filter can restrict airflow, preventing your system from cooling effectively. Low refrigerant levels, blocked outdoor units, or worn system components can also reduce AC performance. When these problems go unnoticed, your system may run longer than it should, leading to higher energy bills and unnecessary strain on your equipment.

That is where Davis HVAC Experts can help. Our experienced technicians provide dependable air conditioning repair and thorough system inspections. This ensures equipment is ready for the warmer months ahead. Scheduling an early AC repair service allows our team to identify small issues, restore proper airflow, and confirm that your system is operating safely and efficiently.

Why Mid-Winter HVAC Maintenance Matters More Than You Think

Time of year, homeowners rely on their heating system to keep their home and family comfortable. If you’ve noticed inconsistent temperatures, systems running longer than they should, or energy bills that are higher than usual, it’s time to have your HVAC serviced. These signs can occur gradually, but over time, they will lead to more severe issues.

At Davis HVAC Experts, our mission is to help homeowners recognize these early signs and understand their significance. Our team works with you to determine whether your heating system requires routine maintenance or a more thorough inspection. Addressing minor concerns early can prevent sudden breakdowns when your system is working its hardest.

Professional service checks focus on performance, safety, and overall system efficiency. Parts are checked for wear, and airflow power is assessed. Minor adjustments can be made to enhance overall heating and efficiency. Check-ups can result in lower energy consumption, fewer repair calls down the line, and a longer system lifespan.

If you are noticing your heating system struggling to maintain temperature, cycling more frequently than usual, or sounding louder than you remember, it may be time to schedule a service.

When to Repair vs. Replace Your Furnace or HVAC System

As the colder months approach, you may notice that your furnace is not performing as well as it used to. Your home may take longer to warm up, your system runs louder than usual, or your energy bill increases even when your thermostat remains the same.

At Davis HVAC Experts, we help homeowners evaluate their heating and cooling systems and address issues before they become bigger problems. Our team evaluates your system and recommends whether furnace maintenance is the best course of action or if a full replacement is a better investment.

In some situations, a simple repair can get your system back on track. However, certain warning signs suggest your furnace may be nearing the end of its usable life. Older units often struggle once they pass the 15-year mark, especially if they have had repeated service calls. You may also notice that certain rooms no longer warm evenly or your furnace is running longer without ever reaching your desired temperature. Unusual smells, new noises, or sudden spikes in your utility bill can also indicate deeper issues within the system. These changes often mean the unit is working harder than it should be.

If you notice any of these problems, it may be time to explore next steps and replacement options. A new furnace or air conditioner can improve energy efficiency, heat your home more evenly, and reduce future repair costs. Davis HVAC Experts is here to guide you through the process with clear recommendations and dependable service.

How to find a Reliable AC Contractor and What to Ask Before Hiring

When your HVAC system stops working or starts showing signs of unreliability, finding someone you can trust becomes a priority. You want a reliable contractor who will provide you with honest guidance, fair pricing, and high-quality work. With so many companies to choose from, it can be challenging to know exactly where to start and how to resolve your issue quickly.

A significant first step is to look for experience, licensing, and recent customer reviews. These provide a clear picture of how a company treats homeowners and how effectively they handle HVAC repair. Next, ask what services they provide and whether they offer same-day or next-day emergency repairs.

Before hiring, consider a few simple questions:

            • Do you provide a written estimate before work begins

            • What brands or systems do you specialize in

            • Do you offer maintenance plans to prevent future issues

            • Are your technicians certified and insured

These questions help you understand not just the cost, but also the long-term value you will receive from their services.

You’ve noticed that your home doesn’t cool as well as it used to. Certain rooms stay warm, your system runs longer, and your energy bills continue to climb. You wonder if your air conditioner can be repaired or if it’s finally time for something new.

Upgrading can significantly improve energy efficiency, reduce maintenance costs, and enhance indoor air quality.

What Commercial HVAC Clients Need to Know About System Lifespan

Owning a commercial HVAC system is one of the most significant investments for business owners. Your system should allow maintained comfort, safety, and productivity in your space. Knowing how long your system should last and when to plan for HVAC system upgrades is key to avoiding downtime and unexpected costs.

Typically, a commercial HVAC unit will last between 15 and 20 years, depending on how regularly it is maintained and used. Commercial HVAC filters should be changed frequently, parts cleaned, and ductwork checked to prevent airflow issues. Regular inspections and quarterly checkups is the best way to extend the lifespan of your unit.

Unit energy efficiency is another factor to consider. Even if your HVAC unit is still running, outdated systems can consume more energy and increase monthly utility costs. In most cases, investing in an upgraded system provides long-term savings and improves comfort for employees and customers.

If you start to notice a gradual rise in your energy bills, uneven heating or cooling in your space, or frequent repair calls, it may be a good time to discuss the benefits of a system upgrade with a professional contractor. At Davis HVAC Experts, we provide honest recommendations, scheduled routine maintenance, and full installation services to keep your unit running for its maximum lifespan.

5 Tips for your HVAC in the Fall

Fall is the perfect transition time to prepare your HVAC system for the cooler months ahead. AtDavis HVAC Experts, we want to help your system run as efficiently as possible and make your home comfortable year-round.

Here are some tips to get your HVAC ready for fall:

           1. Replace Air Filters in Your Home

This step to clean filters will improve overall airflow, help your system run smoothly, and keep your indoor air quality high. Try to change these filters every 1-3 months for best results.

           2. Schedule Seasonal Maintenance

A professional check-in can catch minor issues before they turn into costly repairs, ensuring your system is ready for use.

           3. Check Your Thermostat

Make sure your in-home thermostat is working correctly and programmed for cooler temperatures. Consider upgrading to a smart thermostat for more controls and energy-saving solutions.

           4. Clean Your Outdoor HVAC Unit

Be sure to remove leaves, sticks, and other debris around the outdoor unit to keep airflow unobstructed and performing at its best.

           5. Seal Any Air Leaks

Inspect windows, doors, and ductwork for drafts. Checking if your home is airtight can improve comfort and save money on costly heating bills in colder months, if a leak is present.

Taking care of your HVAC in the fall reduces the chance of unexpected system surprises or issues in the winter.

Unsure where to start? Call Davis HVAC Experts today and schedule your seasonal maintenance. We will be sure your system is efficient and cared for this winter.

The Real Cost of Skipping a Yearly AC Tune-Up

Think skipping your annual AC tune-up will save you money? It'll actually cost you more. A yearly tune-up can seem like overkill, but we've seen it save homeowners from unexpected costs and uncomfortable summers time and time again.

Here’s what skipping your yearly AC tune-up could really cost you:

           1. Higher Energy Bills

Without regular maintenance and upkeep, your system has to work harder to cool your home, driving up your monthly utility bills. A simple tune-up can restore peak efficiency.

           2. Shortened Equipment Lifespan

Dust buildup, worn parts, and unnoticed issues can cause your AC to wear out faster. Routine maintenance helps extend the life of your system and protects your investment.

           3. Surprise Breakdowns

There’s never a good time for your AC to fail, but it’s most likely to happen on the hottest day of the year. Annual inspections catch small problems before they become big, costly repairs.

           4. Poor Indoor Air Quality

How To Prepare Your HVAC System Before Leaving for Vacation

Planning a summer vacation? Before you pack your bags, don’t forget to prep your HVAC system. A few simple steps can help you save energy, protect your equipment, and ensure you return to a comfortable home.

           1. Adjust Your Thermostat

If you’re leaving in the summer, set your thermostat a few degrees higher (around 75–80°F). This keeps the system from running unnecessarily while still protecting your home from extreme temperatures.

           2. Use a Smart Thermostat

Smart thermostats allow you to monitor and adjust your home’s temperature remotely. You can even schedule the system to return to your ideal comfort level before you get home.

           3. Change Your Air Filter

A clean filter keeps your system running efficiently while you're away and helps maintain air quality for when you return.

           4. Check for Leaks or Blockages

Walk around your vents and outdoor unit to make sure nothing is blocking airflow. Trim bushes or remove debris as needed.

           5. Schedule a Maintenance Check

If you’ll be away for an extended period, a quick HVAC inspection can give you peace of mind.

At Davis HVAC Experts, we want your system to stay reliable, whether you're at home or away. Call us today to schedule your maintenance check-up so you can have peace of mind on your trip!

How HVAC Systems Can Affect Your Home’s Resale Value: The impact of a well-maintained or upgraded HVAC system on the resale value of a home.

When preparing to sell your home, you may think first of curb appeal, paint colors, or kitchen updates, but don’t overlook your HVAC system. A well-maintained or recently upgraded HVAC system can significantly increase your home’s resale value. At Davis HVAC Experts, we’ve helped many homeowners make smart HVAC improvements that pay off when it’s time to sell.

Here’s why your HVAC system matters when it’s time to sell:

1. Energy Efficiency Sells

Modern, energy-efficient HVAC systems are a major selling point. Buyers are drawn to homes that promise lower utility bills and a reduced environmental footprint.

2. Comfort and Reliability

A newer or properly maintained system gives buyers peace of mind, knowing they won’t have to worry about repairs or replacements right after moving in.

3. Improved Home Inspection Results

HVAC systems are a major focus during home inspections. A clean, functioning system with good maintenance records can help avoid red flags and delays in closing.

4. Increased Market Appeal

Upgrades like smart thermostats, zoning systems, and improved air filtration add modern appeal and make your home stand out from the competition.

Be sure to schedule regular maintenance, keep a maintenance log, replace air filters frequently and consider upgrades whether you’re getting ready to sell or simply want to increase your home's value. Contact Davis HVAC Experts for any of your HVAC needs!

The Benefits of Zoning Systems for Your Home HVAC

Do you struggle with hot and cold spots in different areas of your home? A zoning system could be the perfect solution for improved comfort and energy efficiency!

What is a Zoning System? A zoning system divides your home into separate areas, or “zones,” each with its own thermostat. Instead of heating or cooling the entire house at once, your HVAC system directs airflow only to the zones that need it. With independent temperature control, each zoned room can be set to its own ideal temperature for personalized comfort.

How Does It Work?

Motorized dampers inside the ductwork open and close to control airflow to specific areas.

Multiple thermostats allow independent temperature control.

Your HVAC system only runs where it’s needed, reducing energy waste.

Why Choose a Zoning System?

Better Comfort – Say goodbye to rooms that are too hot or too cold like basements, rooms with lots of windows, and finished attic spaces.

Energy Efficiency – Only heat or cool the areas you use, lowering energy costs.

Personalized Control – Family members can set different temperatures in different rooms for maximum comfort.

Reduced Wear & Tear – Your HVAC system works more efficiently, extending its lifespan.

If you’re ready to upgrade to a zoned HVAC system, Davis HVAC Experts can design and install a solution tailored to your home. Contact us today to learn more!

Smart thermostats now learn your preferences and adjust settings automatically, optimizing comfort and reducing energy costs. Some models even use AI to anticipate your needs based on weather patterns and personal usage.

Advanced filtration systems, UV light purifiers, and whole-home dehumidifiers are helping homeowners reduce allergens, bacteria, and airborne pollutants for healthier indoor air.

           Eco-Friendly Refrigerants

With environmental concerns in mind, the industry is shifting toward more sustainable refrigerants, like A2L, that reduce greenhouse gas emissions while maintaining top performance.

The Role of HVAC in Allergy Control

Did you know your HVAC system can play a significant role in reducing allergens in your home? At Davis HVAC Experts, we understand how important indoor air quality is for your health and comfort. Here’s how your HVAC system can help combat allergies year-round:

           1. Air Filtration

Your HVAC system’s filter captures and reduces your exposure to common allergens like dust, pollen, pet dander, and mold spores. Upgrading to a high-efficiency filter can further reduce airborne irritants.

           2. Humidity Control

Excess humidity can lead to mold growth, while overly dry air can irritate your sinuses. A well-maintained HVAC system helps regulate humidity levels, creating a healthier environment overall.

           3. Duct Cleaning

Over time, allergens can build up in your ductwork. Regular duct cleaning removes these irritants and keeps your air circulating clean and fresh. Schedule routine maintenance on your HVAC units to make sure your ducts are clean.

           4. Ventilation

Proper ventilation ensures a steady supply of fresh air, reducing the concentration of indoor allergens and improving overall air quality. Be sure to speak with a professional to make sure your home is properly ventilated.

At Davis HVAC Experts, we know that saving energy means saving money—and every little adjustment counts! We're here to help you get the most out of your heating and air units while being as efficient as possible. Here’s how you can optimize your HVAC settings and habits year-round:

           Spring & Summer

-Set your thermostat to 75°F or higher when you can. This will allow your HVAC to work less as it gets hotter outside.

-Use ceiling fans to circulate air, so your system works less. Make sure your blades are turning counterclockwise in the warmer months.

-Keep blinds and curtains closed during the hottest part of the day.

           Fall & Winter

-Set your thermostat to 68°F or lower while you’re awake and lower at night or when you’re out.

-Seal any air leaks in windows and doors to keep the heat inside.

-Use cozy layers to stay warm without overworking your system.

           Year-Round Habits

-Change air filters regularly to keep your HVAC system efficient. Check with your HVAC technician to know what filter is best for your home.

-Schedule routine maintenance to catch issues before they escalate.

-Consider upgrading to a smart thermostat for precise energy control.

Signs Your HVAC System Needs a Professional Inspection

The health of your HVAC unit will determine how comfortable you are in the cold winter months and the hot summer months. That being said, HVAC units have a lot of parts and can be tricky to understand. Here are a few warning signs your HVAC system needs repair or replacement:

           High Energy Bills:

If your electricity bill has spiked for no apparent reason, it might be due to an HVAC system that is working too hard.

           Weak Airflow:

When your unit is running, the airflow from your vents should be a consistent even breeze. If you notice air is barely coming from your vents, your HVAC system needs to be inspected by your local HVAC technician.

           Warm Air:

Air temperature from vents should either be cold (when AC is running) or heated (when heat is running). Warm air won't heat or cool your house and is a sign of a damaged unit.

           Unpleasant Smells:

The air coming from your vents shouldn't have any type of smell. Musty air is likely from mold in your unit and a strong burning smell could indicate exposed electrical wiring. Both should be addressed immediately.

           Age of System:

If your HVAC unit is 15-20 years of age and you notice any of the above issues, your system has likely reached its limit and now is the time to replace your unit.

To ensure your HVAC unit lasts as long as possible, be sure to schedule a routine inspection once every six months. Call Davis HVAC Experts today to make sure your HVAC system is ready for the season ahead!

Winter HVAC Prep: Steps to Keep Your System Running Smoothly All Season

Winter is on its way and your HVAC needs your attention! At Davis HVAC Experts, we want to help you stay warm and energy-efficient all winter long. Prepping your HVAC system for the colder months is key to avoiding heat loss in the winter. Here’s a quick guide to preparing your HVAC system for the winter:

           Schedule a Professional Inspection:

Have one of our experts inspect your furnace or heat pump to ensure it’s running well and make sure your ducts are clear. Regular maintenance can increase the lifetime of your unit and catch issues before they become costly problems.

           Replace Air Filters:

Clean air filters improve air quality and help your HVAC system run more efficiently. Replace them every 1-3 months, especially during heavy usage periods like winter.

           Seal Air Leaks:

Check around windows, doors, and ducts for drafts. Sealing these leaks can help keep warm air inside and lower your energy bills.

Are you considering upgrading your home to a smart thermostat? Here are some of the benefits of smart thermostats:

           Remote Access & Control:

Most smart thermostats can be controlled from anywhere by using your smartphone. This means you can adjust your home's temperature on your phone while you're at work, on vacation, or out running errands.

           Customized Comfort:

Smart thermostats let you program different temperatures for different times of the day or week, ensuring your home is always comfortable. For example, you can set your system to lower the heat while you’re sleeping or turn on the air when you arrive.

           Connecting with Smart Home Devices:

Another perk is connecting with smart home devices like lights, speakers, and even voice assistants (Alexa, Google Home, etc.) so you can seamlessly control your home.

           Environmental Benefits:

Smart thermostats help reduce your carbon footprint by optimizing your HVAC system’s energy consumption. Your smart thermostat can detect when you leave the house so your HVAC system isn’t running when you aren’t home. This helps lower your energy bill and promote eco-friendly living.

Indoor Air Quality: Tips for a Healthy Home

The air you breathe inside your home directly impacts your health and enhancing your indoor air quality is easier than it seems! The Davis HVAC Experts want to make sure you're breathing the cleanest air possible. Learn how to improve your home air quality with these simple steps:

Change Air Filters: Filters trap dust, allergens, and pet dander, preventing them from circulating in your home. Replace filters every 1-3 months, or more often if you have pets or allergies, to ensure your HVAC system runs efficiently and your air remains fresh.

Have Your HVAC Unit and Air Ducts Cleaned: Dust, mold, and particles can build up in your system, leading to poor circulation and potential health issues. A technician can thoroughly clean your unit and ducts, improving air quality and extending the life of your HVAC system.

Invest in a Dehumidifier: High humidity fosters mold and dust mites, which can worsen indoor air quality. A dehumidifier helps maintain balanced moisture levels, reducing allergens and creating a cleaner living environment.

Clean Around the House:

Vacuum and Clean Rugs/Carpet: Regular vacuuming with a HEPA filter removes dust and allergens

Clean Dryer Vents: Prevent dust buildup and fire hazards by cleaning your dryer vents regularly

Wash Bedding: Washing sheets and bedding weekly in hot water reduces allergens and improves air quality

We know how important air quality is for homeowners and families. Contact Davis HVAC today to schedule your duct cleaning.

The Importance of Regular Duct Cleaning for HVAC Performance

Regular air duct cleaning is essential for maintaining the efficiency of your HVAC system. Over time, dust, debris, and allergens accumulate in your ductwork, restricting airflow and causing your system to work harder than necessary. This not only increases energy consumption but also leads to higher utility bills and a shortened lifespan for your HVAC unit.

Clean ducts ensure optimal airflow, allowing your HVAC system to heat and cool your home more effectively. This means your system doesn’t have to run as long or as frequently to maintain the desired temperature, which reduces wear and tear and can prevent costly repairs. Additionally, clean ducts improve indoor air quality by removing pollutants that can trigger allergies and respiratory issues, creating a healthier living environment for you and your family.

During a professional duct cleaning, technicians can inspect your ductwork for leaks, mold growth, and other problems that could compromise your system’s performance. Addressing these issues promptly can prevent more significant, expensive repairs down the line.

Choosing the Right HVAC System for Your Home

Selecting the right HVAC system is crucial for comfort, energy efficiency, and cost savings. There are a few things to keep in mind when choosing your new system:

The size of your home determines the appropriate HVAC system. An undersized unit will struggle to maintain comfort, leading to increased wear and higher energy bills, whereas an oversized system will cycle on and off frequently, causing inefficient energy use and humidity issues. When you choose Davis HVAC, our qualified technicians will ensure the system matches your home’s square footage and layout.

Consider your energy consumption habits and efficiency goals. Modern HVAC units come with various energy ratings, with SEER (Seasonal Energy Efficiency Ratio) being key for air conditioners and heat pumps. Higher SEER ratings indicate greater efficiency, leading to significant energy savings over time.

There are various HVAC system types, including central air conditioners, heat pumps, ductless mini-splits, and furnaces. Each type has advantages and is suited to different home environments and climates. Heat pumps are efficient for mild climates, while furnaces may be more effective in colder regions.

At Davis HVAC Experts, we believe choosing the right HVAC system should be honest, quick, and affordable. Contact us today, and let us help you find the right unit for your home to ensure year-round comfort.

Understanding SEER Ratings: A Guide for Homeowners

           What is a SEER Rating?

Seasonal Energy Efficiency Ratio (SEER) ratings are pivotal for home or business owners looking to maximize their HVAC systems. SEER ratings range from 13-22 depending on the HVAC unit brand. A higher SEER number denotes greater efficiency in cooling or heating, directly impacting energy use and expenses.

           Why Is It Important?

While higher SEER systems may cost more upfront, they will lean towards long-term savings on utility bills and a reduced environmental footprint. When choosing your next system, we recommend opting for a unit with an appropriate SEER rating that aligns your efficiency goals with your budget to optimize energy efficiency for your home or business.

What Difference Will It Make?

SEER ratings influence not only energy consumption but also overall home comfort. Efficient systems maintain consistent temperatures, control humidity levels, and enhance indoor air quality. Features like variable-speed compressors and smart thermostat compatibility, often found in higher SEER units, further optimize comfort and savings.

Regardless of the system you choose, it’s important to stay up to date on regular maintenance for your unit to sustain HVAC efficiency no matter the SEER rating.

Scheduled tune-ups, filter changes, and choosing Davis HVAC Experts for reliable and adequate insulation and ductwork will contribute to your systems' longevity and performance for your home or business.

For home or business owners, the longevity and efficiency of HVAC units are crucial for maintaining a comfortable environment and maximizing energy efficiency. Here are a few tips to keep your system running smoothly.

           Filter Changes:

Clogged filters restrict airflow, making your system work harder and reducing its efficiency. Aim to replace filters every 1-3 months, depending on usage and filter type.

Scheduled Maintenance Checks:

Annual or bi-annual maintenance checks can prevent costly repairs and extend the lifespan of your HVAC unit. Checks include inspecting components, cleaning coils, lubricating moving parts, and ensuring optimal system performance.

Vacation Preparation:

Before leaving, adjust your HVAC settings accordingly. In warmer months, raise the temperature to reduce cooling costs, and in cooler months, keep the temperature above 55 degrees to prevent freezing pipes.

Outdoor Unit Care:

Ensure the outdoor unit is free from debris, such as leaves, branches, and dirt. Trim foliage around the unit to maintain proper airflow and prevent obstruction.

Indoor Air Quality:

Invest in indoor air quality products, such as air purifiers or humidifiers, to enhance comfort and health. Clean indoor air filters regularly and consider upgrading to high-efficiency filters to capture more pollutants and allergens.

Proactive HVAC maintenance is key to avoiding costly repairs and enjoying year-round comfort in your home.

           HVAC Terms and Meanings

Deciding which HVAC (Heating Ventilation and Air Conditioning) system is one of one of the most important, and expensive, decisions a homeowner will make. There are so many acronyms involved, it can probably seem like a foreign language when trying to pick which product and company to move forward with. A little bit of understanding can go a long way in making the right decision.

Hopefully the information below, can help you to better understand what you are looking at when comparing systems to one another!

           Types of Systems

           Split System

A split system has one unit inside the home and one outside. This setup can consist of a furnace and air conditioner, an air handler and heat pump, or a furnace and heat pump. Which configuration is best for your home will depend largely on where you live and what fuel sources you have access to.

           Dual Fuel System

These systems include an electric heat pump that works in conjunction with a furnace. In milder times of the year like the spring and fall, the heat pump heats the home. During weather that's too cold for a heat pump to operate effectively, the furnace takes over. This type of system saves money because it typically costs less to heat the home with a heat pump than a furnace.

           Ductless Mini-Split

A ductless mini-split system has an outdoor unit that contains the compressor and condenser, and an indoor air handler mounted in the room that blows hot or cold air directly into the room. This type of system is usually best for small spaces like garages and workshops that don’t require a traditional split system.

           Ducted Mini Split

A ducted mini-split system uses a mini-split outdoor heat pump with an air handler and traditional ductwork to heat and cool a home. These systems are a cost-effective way to get much higher efficiency at a much more affordable cost.

           Packaged System

A packaged system contains the traditional components of a split system. However, all units are housed outside. This solution works best for homes that don’t have the space for a heating unit inside the home.

           Geothermal Heat Pumps

Geothermal heat pumps basically work like every other heat pump, although a geothermal heat pump exchanges heat with the earth instead of the outdoor air. Outdoor air temperatures can vary greatly from day to night or from winter to summer, while the temperature just a few feet below the earth’s surface stays an average of fifty-seven degrees to seventy degrees Fahrenheit year-round which makes for an extremely efficient system.

Single Stage vs Two-Stage vs Variable Speed

           Single Stage System

The system is either 100% on or 100% off. These systems are typically the least expensive, but less efficient than multistage systems.

           Two Stage System

The system still has the ability to be 100% on or off, but also gives the flexibility to operate at a second stage of much lower capacity and energy usage. This second stage typically operates at around 70% capacity. These systems are typically more efficient than a single stage system.

           Variable Speed System

Variable speed systems are the most efficient and mean that your system can operate at virtually any capacity from around 25% to 100% depending on the demand needed at the given time. This precise usage keeps the temperature much more consistent while also pulling more humidity from the air and providing better air filtration.

           How is Efficiency Measured?

           BTU – British Thermal Unit

The British Thermal Unit is a measure of the amount of heat required to raise one pound of water by one degree Fahrenheit. HVAC equipment size is measured in terms of BTUs. For example: a 3-ton heat pump would be 36,000 BTU. (1 Ton = 12,000 BTU)

           EER – Energy Efficiency Ratio

This rating is a measurement of the energy efficiency of an air conditioner at a specific outdoor temperature (95 degrees F).

SEER - Seasonal Energy Efficiency Ratio

This rating used to describe the efficiency of an air conditioner over an entire season of varying temperatures.

HSPF - Heating Seasonal Performance Factor

This rating describes the efficiency of a heat pump over a heating season.

AFUE – Annual Fuel Utilization Efficiency

During the process of conversion of fuel into heat energy, some percentage of energy is always lost in conversion. AFUE measures the efficiency with which a fuel transforms into heat.

           Certifying the Ratings

AHRI – Air-Conditioning, Heating, and Refrigeration Institute

The organization maintains technical standards, certifies products, shares data, conducts research on HVAC equipment.

           AHRI Certificate

The AHRI Product Performance Certification Program is a program, administered and governed by AHRI, which ensures that various types of heating, ventilation, air conditioning, refrigeration, and water heating products perform according to manufacturers' published claims. We always recommend requesting that an HVAC company provide you with an AHRI certificate to confirm that you are getting exactly what they told you.

The relationship between higher efficiency ratings and cost is, in most cases, directly proportional. The additional upfront cost, however, can equate to substantial savings on monthly utility bills. At Davis HVAC Experts, we take our job very serious in helping you find balance and make the best, most informed, decision for your unique situation.

WHAT IS THE INFLATION REDUCTION ACT OF 2022?

The U.S. Government has passed the Inflation Reduction Act of 2022, a piece of legislation covering a broad spectrum of initiatives, including health care costs, clean energy, and the federal deficit, among others.

Of particular interest to homeowners, home builders, and HVAC contractors, this act includes a number of incentives for the installation of high-efficiency home heating and cooling products, including:

           THE REALITY ABOUT THE REBATES

While the $4.3 billion rebate budget certainly catches your eye, it’s best to be patient and attentive to details for now. Here’s why:

Funds will be allocated to state energy offices with a fair amount of discretion on how they will be used.

Depending upon the state, rebate programs may take some time to get implemented.

Funding allocations will vary from state-to-state.

The rebate program will not be available to all households. Households earning less than 80% of the median local income can qualify for the full benefit. Those earning between 80 – 150% of the average local median may be eligible for a partial (50%) benefit.

Rebates will be subject to availability – the funds are capped, so they may run out before the ten-year period is over.

In contrast, the tax credits are in place now, and will continue to be available for the next decade.

TAKING ADVANTAGE OF THE INFLATION REDUCTION ACT TAX CREDITS: PATIENCE PAYS OFF

The Inflation Reduction Act of 2022 both extends and expands existing 25C and 25D tax credits to homeowners and 45L tax credits to home builders for installing applicable high-efficiency HVAC equipment. Each of these credits has specific efficiency requirements to qualify as outlined in the chart below. The bill applies to systems installed in 2022, and some of these credits will increase in 2023.

Here is a summary of the tax credits as they stand now, and for the coming years:

WHEN DOES THIS NEW LEGISLATION TAKE EFFECT?

The Inflation Reduction Act of 2022 was passed by both the Senate and the House of Representatives and signed into law by President Biden in August of 2022. The current 25C, 25D and 45L tax credits apply retroactively to products installed beginning on January 1, 2022. As noted in the chart above, these tax credits will change again as of January 1, 2023.
